This painting is similar to others in the ‘Road Ahead’ series.
In this painting of an outback Queensland road, the artist shows the rich, red, volcanic colour of the road base.
An effect of simultaneous contrast has been achieved because the artist has placed yellow-green grass adjacent to the red road, and the two colours interact. It’s a sunny afternoon and the grass reflects sunlight.
He has paid attention to detail by using the tip of his paint brush to ‘stipple’ dots of coloured paint on large areas of the painting. This is in contrast to the long brushstrokes used for the tyre marks on the road. It appears as if there has been recent rain as the road looks a little boggy. The new growth of yellow-green grass indicates this too.
The bright colours in the foreground graduate through mid-tones in the mid-section, where they then transition into softly coloured mountains and a partially cloudy sky. This manipulation of colours gives an illusion of visual depth.
