Friends in Freefall (61 x 45.5 cm)

This uncomplicated skyscape depicts two sky-divers, the artist himself and his girlfriend. They are mid-jump and in dual formation.

He has used the composition ‘rule of thirds’ laterally, and placed the skydivers on the top horizontal line. The left skydiver has been placed on one of the four ‘eyes’ of the canvas.

The artist captured soft daylight and atmospheric effects by using a cool, soft, tinted palette. The short, wispy strokes of white paint have been used as an overlay on the soft, pastel colours of the background. To add variation, some coloured dots (stippling) has also been applied.

The artist may have been influenced by his study of techniques used by Impressionist masters. Perhaps his brushwork is similar to that used in some of the works of Camille Pissarro, a Danish-French Painter.

Complementary colours, orange/gold and blue, work well together and have been chosen for their jumpsuits.

Acrylic on Masonite circa early 1970s. (Signature relocated in framing.)
